Cognitive Dissonance In Psychology: Definition and Examples

Cognitive dissonance

In the field of psychology, cognitive dissonance is the perception of contradictory information and the mental toll of it. Relevant items of information include a person’s actions, feelings, ideas, beliefs, values, and things in the environment.

Feeling…What does cognitive dissonance feel like? Emotionally, individuals may feel confused, uncertain, and experience a sense of disorientation. They may also become defensive and may avoid situations that challenge their beliefs. In severe cases, cognitive dissonance can lead to depression, loss of motivation, and a sense of hopelessness.
